Thailand has achieved the milestone of welcoming 33 million international tourists in 2024. The achievement highlights the nation’s thriving tourism sector and its central role in its economy. Thailand’s visitors contribute approximately 1.5 trillion baht (USD 43.9 billion), significantly aiding the country’s economic recovery.

Leading the pack is China, with 6.3 million visitors, followed by Malaysia at 4.6 million, and India at 2 million. South Korea and Russia also contributed significantly, with 1.7 million and 1.5 million visitors, respectively. These numbers demonstrate that Thailand has an appeal that attracts tourists from various regions.

On December 16, the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT) recognized Thailand’s 2nd millionth Indian tourist. Mr. Chetan Gupta received a special gift package, along with business class round-trip tickets, a limousine service, and stay at a Thai five-star hotel.

India represents an important and sizeable market for Thailand tourism. In the first 11 months of 2024, Thailand welcomed more than 1.9 million Indian tourists.

Contributors to growth

Several government initiatives can be attributed to this tourism growth. For instance, Thailand has issued visa exemptions for Chinese and Indian tourists, enabling simplified travel while encouraging extended stays.

Since March, Chinese tourists have benefited from permanent visa-free entry, prompting a steady rise in arrivals. Similarly, since July, Indian visitors have enjoyed visa-free entry with stays extended up to 60 days.

Flight connectivity has also played a crucial role in this success. Specifically, collaborations with international airlines have increased flight capacity, enhancing accessibility to major destinations. For example, Neos airline recently launched direct flights from Ostrava, Czech Republic, to Phuket, targeting 60,000 Czech tourists annually.

In addition, inbound seat capacity also increased by 10 percent in the second half of 2024. This was largely due to the Thai government’s “Ease of Traveling” system, which helps facilitate travel for foreign tourists.

So far, tourism has generated 1.5 trillion baht. While 2019 remains the benchmark with 39.9 million visitors and 1.91 trillion baht in revenue, 2024 is showing strong signs of recovery. This growth positions Thailand to surpass pre-pandemic levels in the near future.

Key focus areas of Thailand

Looking ahead, Thailand has ambitious goals for the remaining weeks of the year. The government aims to attract 36 million international tourists by the end of 2024. To achieve this, Thailand is focusing on long-haul markets, particularly European travelers, during the holidays.

Sustainability also remains a priority. Thai authorities are working to balance the rising influx of visitors with environmental and cultural preservation. By promoting responsible tourism, the country seeks to ensure long-term benefits while maintaining its natural and cultural heritage.

The bigger picture

Thailand’s achievements in 2024 reflect the success of its strategic tourism policies. By attracting millions of visitors, the nation has reinforced its status as a leading destination in Southeast Asia.

With ongoing initiatives and renewed global interest, Thailand is poised to set new records in tourism. The industry’s sustained growth will undoubtedly play a vital role in strengthening the country’s economy.
