Malaysian Tourists Set on Fire
A former boxer set two Malaysian tourists on fire in downtown Bangkok last Thursday, causing severe burns. In particular, the assailant performed the crime on the stairs of Big C on Ratchadamri Road, a popular shopping destination.
Police claim that the suspect, Varakorn Pubthaisong, doused Ong Yik Leong, 26, and Gan Xiao Zhen, 27, with thinner. Next, he then set them on fire.
According to witnesses, bystanders quickly rushed to the aid of the two Malaysian tourists. Not long after, authorities arrived to chaes and detain the suspect. Meanwhile, responders brought Ong to the ICU at the Police General Hospital, and Gan to the King Chulalongkorn Memorial Hospital. Both remain in intensive care, having suffered extensive burn injuries.
Better Tourist Safety
The Thai government moved quickly to address the attack’s fallout.
In particular, Tourism and Sports Ministry Permanent Secretary Natreeya Taweewong vowed to strengthen safety measures in tourist hotspots.

Moreover, Thai officials coordinated directly with the Malaysian Embassy to ensure constant updates for the victims’ families. Hence, this case drew immediate attention because Malaysia is among Thailand’s top five tourist sources, with over 4.5 million arrivals last year.
Malaysian Victims’ Recovery and Support
Hospital officials have confirmed that one of the Malaysian victims, Ong, remains under close observation. Specifically, the attack caused second-degree burns on the front and back of his upper body. Fortunately, he is now stable, reports say.
Meanwhile, Gan suffered second-degree burns over 36% of her face, chest, and arm. Reports also claim that she is now able to commnicate through writing despite her painful injuries.
Both of the victims’ families have arrived in Bangkok to be near them. However, doctors have not cleared them for travel home yet.
Additionally, psychological counselors are working with the victims to manage trauma. Authorities have pledged continuous care until full recovery, including medical, logistical, and emotional support.
Thailand To Compensate Malaysian Victims
Thailand’s government approved compensation of up to THB 550,000 baht (about $15,000) per Malaysian victim. This includes 500,000 baht for medical treatment and 50,000 baht for emotional distress.
Furthermore, additional funds will be provided if doctors recommend extended care. Officials stressed that the victims will not bear any hospital expenses.
The Ministry of Tourism is also covering travel arrangements for family members. Correspondingly, this swift action aims to reassure visitors about Thailand’s commitment to tourist safety and welfare.

The attack on the Malaysian tourists comes as Thailand pushes to rebuild its tourism sector post-pandemic. In 2024, the country welcomed over 35 million international tourists. Therefore, any incident involving foreign visitors draws heightened scrutiny.
