Ahead of its launch on May 1, the new Thailand Digital Arrival Card (TDAC) is already causing concern among travelers and expats. While it aims to enhance national security and modernize immigration, many users are already reporting several technical issues and poor communication. Consequently, the overall sentiment is uncertainty.

TDAC Teething Issues

Thailand authorities are testing TDAC at major entry points, including at Suvarnabhumi Airport. Overall, it aims to replace paper immigration forms with a digital process. The Thai government promotes it as a tool to boost border security and streamline arrivals.

However, the transition has not been smooth. For now, the system remains in a trial phase. Yet, issues are already surfacing across travel forums and social media.

Glitches and User Confusion

Firstly, many travelers are facing technical problems with the TDAC. Some Thailand residents report that they are unable to indicate Thailand as their home country or country of residence.

“I am living in Thailand for many years already and one of the questions is country of residence,” wrote one user on ASEAN Now. “So I have to fill in Thailand, but that is NOT possible.. and it is a required field. So how can I fill in my card? And when I can’t do it I will get a problem at immigration or do I have to lie and fill in my orginal country?”

Meanwhile, another TDAC user asked on Reddit, “The video says non-Thai residents must complete the form. That includes me as I have a 20 year visa. I can’t put UK as I no longer live or have an address there and you can’t put Thailand as your place of residence. The form needs revising to accommodate this by the looks of it.”

Consequently, users have experienced frustration before their journey.

Moreover, there’s confusion about whether TDAC is optional or mandatory. While some officials say it’s in testing, others suggest compliance is already mandatory. Because of this, travelers are unsure how to prepare.

Poor Communication on TDAC

Even more troubling, communication has been inconsistent. Many travelers say they received no notice from airlines or Thai embassies about TDAC. Additionally, airport officials reportedly provide mixed messages, which adds to the confusion.
Some users only learn about the form while checking in at the airport.

Unfortunately, that leaves little time to complete it. Consequently, travelers scramble to comply.

Data Privacy Issues

Another major concern involves privacy. Travelers are unsure how the Thailand government stores, processes, or protects their personal data. Although authorities insist TDAC is secure, they have not released details about its privacy policy. Hence, the lack of transparency can cause anxiety.

Previously, in April 2024, it was found that the previous TM6 arrival forms were stored in warehouses, sparking privacy concerns. Therefore, skeptics question whether this system will be any different.

Currently, Thai authorities say the TDAC system remains in a pilot phase. In the meantime, officials ask the public for patience and feedback. Furthermore, they claim the rollout will be adjusted based on performance and user concerns.
